Briggs files major lawsuit

Posted on 27 January 2011 by felipe

January 25th 2011:

Former two-time world heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs, who spent 12 days in a German hospital after sustaining a wicked, 12-round beating at the hands of current world champion Vitali Klitschko in October, is fighting back. But, this time, the Brooklyn born and raised Briggs is not targeting an opponent in the ring. Briggs claims that he has been a victim of a “ripoff” on two fronts by his former promoters and business partners, part and parcel of which includes documents in which his signature was “forged.”

On Tuesday, Briggs filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court, alleging breach of fiduciary duty, conversion, unjust enrichment and breach of contract against Gregory D. Cohen, Shelly Finkel and Barry Honig, and their boxing and entertainment promotional company, Empire Sports & Entertainment. In the legal filing, which seeks compensatory and punitive damages, Briggs said that he agreed to fight the powerful Klitschko with the understanding that he would be paid a purse of $750,000, but that he wound up with a mere $25,000, after he returned to the United States after the prolonged hospital stay in Hamburg.

Among Briggs’ fight injuries were a torn left bicep, a left tendon rupture and serious damage to his eyes. “To add insult to injury,” the lawsuit alleges, “the defendants deducted the cost of Briggs’ hospitalization from the understated purse of the bout.”

Also, according to attorneys Jethro M. Eisenstein of Profeta & Eisenstein and Michael Marley, the defendants have also denied the fighter, now age 39 and still nursing what may be career-ending injuries from the Klitschko bout, “the compensation he was promised and to which he was entitled for his services to Golden Empire, Empire and Holdings.”

Briggs contends that the two original, “50 percent” shareholders in fledgling Golden Empire, which later became Empire, were himself and Cohen and that he invested untold hours and used his prominent name in the sport to recruit and then sign talented boxers from different countries, including the Dominican Republic and Sweden, to promotional deals with Golden Empire which later became Empire.

Former world heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, was personally recruited by Briggs to sign with the company. Briggs also claims to have had a major role in Golden Empire/Empire expanding from boxing into the music business where the boxer “introduced Cohen and Finkel to major players” in that field.

The lawsuit alleges that the Briggs-Klitschko bout came about after Finkel became Chief Executive Officer of Empire and that Finkel was, at the same time, a consultant to Klitschko’s promotional company, K2 Promotions.

“At all times,” the lawsuit says, “Cohen, Honig and Finkel were in a fiduciary relationship with Briggs, as officers of a company in which Briggs held an ownership interest which obliged these defendants to act with scrupulous good faith in their dealings with Briggs.”

Not long after Briggs flew back from Germany, the lawsuit says the defendants released him from the boxing promotional agreement. The lawsuit says that “defendants have denied Briggs the compensation he was promised and to which he was entitled to for his services to Golden Empire, Empire and Holdings.

“By their manipulation of successor corporations, defendants Cohen, Finkel and Honig have sought to dilute and diminish to the vanishing point the ownership interest Briggs has in the enterprise.”

Finally, the lawsuit alleges “Briggs understood and believed that his ownership interest in Golden Empire would ensure a promotional relationship in which his interests would always be advanced and protected.”

And then, expecting to be paid $750,000 for his brave stand in taking “a brutal beating” from Klitschko, Briggs was paid $25,000 and “terminated” from Empire’s roster.

Wolak to face Foreman

Posted on 17 January 2011 by felipe

Polish junior middleweight contender Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak (28-1, 18 KOs) once again will look to add that elusive signature victory on his resume, that could vault him into a world title shot when he faces former WBA champion Yuri Foreman (28-1, 8 KOs) on March 12th at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada. The fight will be a supporting bout for the Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Mayorga Showtime pay per view card promoted by Top Rank.

The signature victory could have happened back on December 4th when Wolak entered into a contract as a late replacement to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. It was a roller coaster ride from the time the fight was signed.

“It was very difficult for me psychologically,” said Wolak. “I was preparing for another fight at junior middleweight, when we were asked to take on Chavez, Jr. at middleweight. We accepted and then the following weekend we were told that he would be unable to make the weight. We agreed to move up even further in weight so that the fight would go through. Then on the Monday before the fight, we are told that Chavez Jr. had a high fever and had to pull out of the fight. I was mentally preparing myself to fight a main event with Chavez Jr., and then going to a lesser bout with a fighter who I (had) barely watched a couple of rounds of, was emotionally draining.”

In stepped WBC youth world junior middleweight champion Jose Pinzon and Wolak was asked to lose weight and get further down to the middleweight limit.

“Going up in weight and then having to take off again for a last minute replacement was very tough.”

Wolak did make weight though and the bout went on as planned. The risky fight almost had a difficult ending for the Polish sensation, who was sent the canvas for the first time of his career in the second round. Wolak however, showed the will and tenacity of a future champion as he rose to his feet and battled back, winning every subsequent round on his way to a seventh round stoppage of the very tough Pinzon.

Now Wolak will once again get his shot at the elusive signature victory that has eluded him, when he squares off with Yuri Foreman.

“It is really strange fighting Foreman,” said Wolak, “I know Yuri so well, having trained side by side with him as he prepared for the Cotto fight. I watched him sparring and I know he is always in great shape. This is going to be a very tough fight, but I know this is the type of fight that I need to win if I am going to be a world champion.”

Wolak ranked #7 in the world by the WBA, will have another plus in his camp. Respected trainer Tommy Brooks returns to his corner to work alongside “Terrific” Aroz Gist.

Brooks had also trained Foremen for several fights so he knows his style well.

Manager Ivan Edwards stated the importance of adding Brooks to the corner: “I know that Brooks and ‘Terrific’ are great trainers. Brook’s familiarity with Foreman could be a pivotal key to the victory for Wolak.”

Edwards has meticulously and methodically moved Wolak up the ladder into national contention and he is aware that Foreman will be Wolak’s biggest test. “I know Foreman is a tough fighter, but I believe Wolak’s tremendous pressure, will and determination to become a champion will allow him to stop Foreman inside of the twelve round distance.”

The fight is the ultimate clash of styles. Foreman, likes to stick and move while Wolak is a pressure fighter.

Wolak knows he must adhere to his game plan, if he is to pull out the biggest victory of his professional career.

“I know I have to be in great shape and work my game plan, round by round, cutting off the ring,” outlined Wolak. “He is not a big puncher, so hopefully I can get to him. I plan to maximize the positives and come out with the victory.”

Wolak is not looking past his showdown with Foreman but he knows a win over the former junior middleweight champ will push him closer to his goal of fighting Chavez Jr. or a current champion.

“Right now my thoughts are only on Foreman, but should I come out uninjured and victorious, I would love to immediately turn around to fight Chavez Jr. or (IBF jr middleweight champion) Cornelius “K9” Bundrage or some of the other top fighters in the middleweight or junior middleweight division. That is only the logical step.”

This will be a battle you won’t want to miss.

Barrett was supposed to retire after his July 17th draw with WBO No. 2 rated David Tua, but an HBO job was put on hold due to economics. “I figured I had 3-4 good fights left in me but I was prepared to retire and work in the business side of boxing,” Monte explained, “It didn’t work out, at least for now, and I’m back doing what I do best – box! I was training with some MMA guys and it got the fire in me back, so I took the Tua fight and as a 14-1 underdog I got a draw. Does that tell you who really won that fight?

“My options are to fight Tua again. I’m 39 but with science and technology, being 39 today is like 30. Boxing is a very physical sport and the modern wonders of technology have helped boxers the most of all. We just don’t eat anything like Ali did in his day. There are strict diets and supplements.
