Queens boxer Will Rosinsky gets shot at the big time

When Will Rosinsky first learned he was fighting Kelly Pavlik on July 7, he thought it was a joke. After all, Rosinsky isn’t exactly a household name in boxing, calling himself just a “kid from Queens that no one’s ever heard of.”

Pavlik, on the other hand, is one of the biggest names in the sport, a fighter whose influence was once so great that in 2008, Hillary Clinton invited him to campaign with her during the Ohio Democratic primary. Pavlik’s star has dimmed since then as he’s battled alcoholism and lost his middleweight titles. But he’s still a boldface name on the comeback trail, a couple wins away from getting another title shot.

The 27-year-old plans to have fun with the spotlight, offering up the idea of wearing a shirt for media day that says, “Who the (heck) is Will Rosinsky?”Rosinsky will earn “by far” the most money he’s made for a fight, according to Connolly, who declined to give an amount. The bout is contracted at 169 pounds.

“It’s the opportunity for Will to walk away a star,” said DiBella. “It’s an opportunity to walk away one of the big players in the division in one night.”

I just called my friend Felipe Gomez, Wills trainer. He is in California with his fighter. Felipe, tells me they are all excited at the opportunity and looking for a win. A win will open the boxing doors for this queens native, because Kelley Pavlick is a world class fighter with a world class name… and both those worlds can transfer over to Will with this win.

Will is one of those really straight up guys, he is honest and a good all around guy as a person. As a boxer, he is very strong, I have seen Will fight once ( his only loss) on TV, when he fought Edwin Rodriguez…it was a close fight and the decision went to the other guy. This is a must see fight because of their styles, it has all the ingredients of a classic match, it should prove to be a very exciting fight. I don’t bet , but if I did, my money will be on Will…and by the way, Will does have the will to win!

Watch the fight on HBO, Saturday July 7th at 10pm www.hbo.com
